An animal diet determines what a certain creature eats. For example, Acrocanthosaurus is a carnivore, therefore, it eats meat. Some creatures have specialized diets, which give mood benefits when satisfied. An example of this is Coelophysis. Coelophysis is a carnivore, so it can eat meat, but its specialized diet is insects. If it is fed insects, it will receive mood benefits.
