Carnotaurus is a medium sized theropod that lived in South America during the Cretaceous period. Carnotaurus only consists of one species Carnotaurus sastrei.

It is unknown when Carnotaurus may return to the roster of Prehistoric Kingdom.

In-Game[]

Description[]

Easily the most iconic of its family, Carnotaurus is one of the largest Abelisaurs ever discovered, a strange line of theropod dinosaurs known for their strange proportions, snub-nose snouts, and tiny arms. Growing up to nine meters in length, Carnotaurus may not be as large as some of it's distant theropod cousins, but it was still a formidable creature nonetheless.

With it's large muscular legs and streamlined build, Carnotaurus can run at speeds estimated at up to forty miles per hour, making it one of the fastest dinosaurs ever. Paired with it's uniquely shaped skull, adorned with its instantly recognizable horns, Carnotaurus is a nimble and agile predator.

Paleontology[]

Carnotaurus was discovered in 1985 by Jose Bonaparte in the La Colonia Formation, where it lived alongside sauropods such as Titanomachya and other abelisaurs like its close reletive Koleken. Its name means "carnivorous bull" in reference to its horns. Only one Carnotaurus specimen is known to science, however the spectacular preservation of this singular skeleton has allowed paleontologists a remarkably clear view at the life appearance of this peculiar predator.

The Carnotaurus holotype is a mostly complete and articulated skeleton with remarkable skin preservation, revealing that this dinosaur had a largely scaly body with erratically placed feature scales and seeming adaptations to heat dispersal somewhat comparable to tactics employed by large mammals in the modern day. The skeleton is only missing the lower legs and back of the tail, allowing for this animal to become an incredibly useful study subject.

Paleoecology[]

Despite the iconic nature of the two small horns located above Carnotaurus' eyes, it is unknown what these horns were used for. Some paleontologists theorize that they may have been used to attract mates with visual displays, while others suspect they may have been used to spar against rival Carnotaurus similar to some hornbill birds.

It is speculated that Carnotaurus would use it's fast speed and strong jaw to deliver several fatal bites to larger dinosaurs, where they would then die from blood loss. Other paleontologists speculate that due to a large amount of flexibility in the animals jaw, matched with its unparalleled speed, Carnotaurus was an efficient ambush predator that excelled in sudden ambushes against small prey.

Trivia[]

  • Similar to Ceratosaurus, Carnotaurus is slotted to receive a full rework by the developers.
  • Carnotaurus is the only Abelisaurid confirmed for Prehistoric Kingdom.
  • Carnotaurus is a very popular dinosaur, having appeared as the main villain in in Disney's Dinosaur as well as a recurring appearance in the Jurassic Park and Jurassic World franchises, in both franchise's literary and theatrical releases.
    • In Michael Crichton's 1995 sequel to Jurassic Park, The Lost World, Carnotaurus was depicted with the ability to change color, much like a chameleon. However, this ability is purely speculative and no evidence supporting this has been found.
