Quite elegant, don't you think? They're especially cute as babies, when they have big eyes and stubby noses just like a puppy.

Only juvenile specimens of these dinosaurs have been found in the fossil record, so I’m eager to see how much larger this one will get!

They originally inhabited forested areas of the Late Jurassic, with their name literally translating to “Tree Lizard”. I wonder if they bark…

Paleontology[]

Dryosaurus was discovered in 1894 by Othniel Charles Marsh and its name means "Oak lizard" in reference to its fossils being found in ancient wooded areas.

Paleoecology[]

Some scientists speculate that its beak may have possessed cheek pouches alongside 'cheek teeth' used for processing the tough plants in it's environment. Dryosaurus fed primarily on low growing vegetation in floodplains. A quick and agile runner with strong legs, it used it's stiff tail as a counterbalance. It is likely it's fast speed is it's only defense against predators besides camouflage. There were several other ornithopods living at the same time as Dryosaurus such as the smaller Nanosaurus. Although similar, Dryosaurus and Nanosaurus belong to different families, with Dryosaurus being more closely related to Iguanodon and Camptosaurus.
