Edmontosaurus is a large herbivorous hadrosaur that lived in North America during the Late Cretaceous. It lived alongside other large dinosaurs such as Tyrannosaurus, Triceratops and Ankylosaurus and is represented in Prehistoric Kingdom by two species, E. regalis and E. annectens, which have unique variation among both species. The third known species of Edmontosaurus is also represented in the game as the alternate genus, Ugrunaaluk.

In-Game[]

Description[]

In Prehistoric Kingdom, there are two species of Edmontosaurus, acoming from different locations and times. E. regalis, while not the largest, is the most unique, owing to the small fleshy comb that protrude from the heads of males, while E. annectens, which lived in Hell Creek alongside other famous taxa such as Triceratops and Tyrannosaurus, grew to much larger sizes, bears a longer snout, and possesses square shaped "back tabs", unlike the rounded tabs seen on E. regalis.

Management[]

Edmontosaurus is a 3 star animal. The two skins in Prehistoric Kingdom are used to represent different Edmontosaurus species and have different needs:

  • "Graveled" is used for Edmontosaurus regalis, individuals of this species prefer wetland and coastal foliage and have the highest exhibit crowding tolerance of the genus at 75%.
  • "Vibrant" is used for Edmontosaurus annectens, Edmontosaurus of this species have the widest environmental tolerance of the genus, preferring foliage from the tropical, wetland, temperate and coastal biomes. They have a lower exhibit crowding tolerance than E. regalis at 60%.

Although it doesn't have a magnificent bony crest like its more famous relatives, some Edmontosaurus sport their own flashy headgear in the form of a “comb” made entirely from soft tissue.

Hadrosaurs are commonly referred to as “duck-billed dinosaurs”, but don't let that catchy moniker fool you - these dinosaurs lived on land, not in water.

Paleontology[]

Edmontosaurus is one of the most well known non-avian dinosaurs ever found, with a wealth of incredible specimens from multiple species in near pristine quality including mummified individuals with scale-perfect details. Thanks to these fantastic fossils we can reconstruct Edmontosaurus from the tip of its beak to the tabs on its back to the end of its tail with remarkable precision, rivalled only by the likes of Psittacosaurus, Microraptor, Sinosauropteryx, and others. Edmontosaurus was named by Lawrence Morris Lambe in 1917, and its name means "Lizard from Edmonton".

Paleoecology[]

Edmontosaurus is one of the largest known ornithischians, with some individuals rivaling even the fearsome Tyrannosaurus in size. With its muscular build, Edmontosaurus could move both bipedally and on all fours, with the latter being its most preferred movement option. The larger species, such as E. annectens, at maximum potential size, could rival the largest known hadrosaur Shantungosaurus, though most did not grow to such sizes.

The skull of Edmontosaurus was both wide and flat, leading Edmontosaurus to be commonly compared to an extremely large duck, with one species of the animal formerly being named in its own genus "Anatotitan", literally meaning "Duck Titan". This wide beak would have allowed Edmontosaurus to consume large quantities of plant matter at a time, which would then be chewed by the remarkable set of tooth batteries further back in its jaws. These tooth batteries have been considered to be some of the most efficient plant processing devices in nature, and likely was a key factor in the explosion of hadrosaurid diversity in the later cretaceous period. Some scientists have even researched potential applications of the hadrosaur chewing mechanism in modern plant processing, so even 66 million years after their extinction Edmontosaurus may still be terrorizing the floral community to this very day.

Trivia[]

  • Edmontosaurus was one of the dinosaurs available in Prehistoric Kingdom’s alpha.
  • Edmontosaurus was the first animal to have its ontogeny revealed in the modern phase of development in 2024's January Dev Diary.
  • Based on fossil evidence, it is likely E. annectens had similar patterning to what is seen in Prehistoric Kingdom in life as the patterning is linked to patches of scales with different sizes than the others.
  • Edmontosaurus is one of many animals in Prehistoric Kingdom that has alternate species for its skins and one of the few animals to have a different species for each of its skins.
  • Edmontosaurus is one of the most popular hadrosaurs, appearing in multiple pieces of popular media, including the Jurassic Park franchise, Jurassic Fight Club, Dinosaur Planet, When Dinosaurs Roamed America and Walking with Dinosaurs (both the series and movie) where it is referred to as "Anatotitan", except in the WWD movie.
