Lambeosaurus is a large herbivorous hadrosaur that lived in North America during the Cretaceous. It is famous for its distinctive crest, a trait common among hadrosaurs, and has three species with the type species Lambeosaurus lambei representing the genus in Prehistoric Kingdom.

In-Game[]

Description[]

Similar to its relative Parasaurolophus, Lambeosaurus is a large and graceful animal. With its distinctive head crest, hoofed forelimbs, and considerable size, Lambeosaurus's overall body plan is rather similar to a number of other hadrosaurs such as Edmontosaurus.

Lambeosaurus, a crested hadrosaur from the Late Cretaceous.

Like others of its kind, it uses its unique hatchet-shaped crest as a sort of resonating chamber. Though not essential, it’s also great at giving a thumbs up!

In my opinion, the most interesting thing about hadrosaurs isn't the presence or absence of a crest, but the way they move. They are able to walk as bipeds or quadrupeds as the situation demands, a rare feature in the animal kingdom.

Hadrosaurs are commonly called “duck-billed dinosaurs” after the toothless beak at the front of their mouths, but they aren't completely toothless! Behind the beak are dense concentrations of teeth that are continually replaced, sort of like a shark. If sharks were cows, that is.

Paleontology[]

Lambeosaurus was named by William Parks in 1923 and was named after the groundbreaking Canadian paleontologist Lawrence Lambe who had worked with the material earlier on. It was originally named as a species of Trachodon by Lambe in 1902.

Paleoecology[]

Lambeosaurus was a lambeosaurine hadrosaur that lived in the Dinosaur Park Formation alongside a number of other herbivorous dinosaurs. The most notable feature of this animal is its remarkable hollow crest. Resembling a tomahawk, Lambeosaurus's unique headgear is theorized to have been useful for communication, both verbally and visually, with these animals regularly using the pompadour-like protrusion as a display to win over possible mates. Hollow nasal-bone tube filled crests allowed lambeosaurines like Lambeosaurus, Parasaurolophus and Corythosaurus to produce sounds not unlike the ones produced my modern wind instruments. Some have even attempted to reconstruct the sounds of these animals by either simulating or physically blowing air through models of their crest tubes, however these experiments have not yet been attempted on Lambeosaurus specifically.

As a hadrosaur, Lambeosaurus possessed a remarkably efficient chewing system, with tooth batteries and jaw movements that would have processed the plants it would have consumed with ease. Lambeosaurines are also known to usually have narrower beaks than saurolophines such as Edmontosaurus, which may suggest that these animals were more selective in their diets. Other hadrosaurs are additionally known to practice parental care and herd living, so it is likely that Lambeosaurus was similar in this regard with individual dinosaurs each becoming part of a giant reptilian orchestra.

Trivia[]

  • Lambeosaurus was one of the dinosaurs available in Prehistoric Kingdom’s alpha.
  • Although the species of Lambeosaurus in Prehistoric Kingdom is L. lambei, originally L. magnicristatus was planned to be included instead.
  • Lambeosaurus has one skin that is larger on average than the others, the "Cosmic" skin.
    • This is in reference to another larger lambeosaurine named Magnapaulia, with its name literally translating to "Big Paul".
