Megatherium is a genus of Pilosan that lived in South America from the Pliocene to the earliest stages of the Holocene. Megatherium is represented by the species M. americanum in Prehistoric Kingdom.

Description[]
This huge sloth has a very robust skeleton and a broad pelvis to both support its large body and provide greater stability. Like modern day tree dwelling sloths Megatherium has long arms with large claws.

Megatherium coexisted with several other mammal species, including those that had crossed into South America from North America, such as Smilodon.
Megatherium, like many extinct Cenozoic mammals, was discovered decades before dinosaur genera were named, having been discovered in 1788 on the bank of the Luján River in what will eventually become Argentina, it was later named in 1796 by the French naturalist Georges Cuvier and its name means "Great beast". Alongside other extinct mammals it was one of the most popular museum exhibits before the dinosaur craze of the Victorian era.
