Palaeontology[]

Prenocephale is a pachycephalosaur from the Nemegt Formation in Mongolia. In life it would have shared its environment with a number of well known dinosaurs such as Tarbosaurus, Deinocheirus, Gallimimus, Therizinosaurus, Alioramus and an assortment of maniraptorans such as forms similar to Velociraptor and some oviraptorosaurs and troodontids. While a relatively small dinosaur, it was one of the larger members of Pachycephalosauridae. It had sloping domed head ringed with small bony spikes and a rather narrow mouth, which suggested it had a selective diet. Like other pachycephalosaurs, it had teeth which may have indicated it had a diet fruit and soft plant leaves rather than rougher foliage.

Another genus found in Mongolia called Homalocephale has caused much debate among palaeontologists. Although mostly now considered a juvenile stage of Prenocephale, a few still argue that it is its own separate genus, pointing out differences in its broader pelvis. Another genus found in the same area, Tylocephale, had the tallest dome of any pachycephalosaur.

Prenocephale, as well as Tylocephale and Homalocephale, were discovered in 1974 by Polish palaeontologists Teresa Maryanska and Halszka Osmolska. Prenocephale means "Sloping Head".
