Psittacosaurus is a genus of small ceratopsians that lived in Asia during the Early Cretaceous. It is known from 12 different species (the most of any non-avian dinosaur) with two described and one undescribed species present in Prehistoric Kingdom.

In-Game[]

Description[]

Psittacosaurus is a small bipedal ceratopsian that possess a parrot-like skull with flared cheek bones and unlike the later ceratopsians it did not have a bony neck frill or facial horns. Even though Psittacosaurus is covered mostly in scales, it also has long quills on its tail.

Thanks to a number of recent findings, we’re able to restore this creature to a high degree of genetic accuracy, right down to the quills and colouration in some of its species.

Just looking at its face, you might not realize that this was one of the first ceratopsians! It may lack a frill and forward-projecting horns, but you can still see the resemblance in its strong beak and its cheek horns.

Just like other ceratopsians, Psittacosaurus is a herbivore, but its sharp beak and simple jaws are better suited to tough plant material such as nuts or seeds. A word of advice, though: Be wary of that beak, they're a little nippy!

Paleontology[]

Psittacosaurus is an early member of the Marginocephalia clade, which includes pachycephalosaurids like Prenocephale and ceratopsians like Protoceratops. Its bipedal stance would be lost in later members of the ceratopsian group, such as Triceratops. Psittacosaurus is one of the most studied dinosaur genus, with some fossils retaining soft material such as skin impressions. The color of a Psittacosaurus is also known, being mostly dark brown overall with a paler underbelly.

Psittacosaurus remains have been found in China, Mongolia, Thailand and Russia. It was first discovered in 1923 in Mongolia, and its name means "Parrot Lizard" in reference to its parrot-like skull.
