Paleontology[]
Stegosaurus was named in 1877 by Othniel Charles Marsh and its name means "roof lizard" in reference to its plates and the initial reconstructions of the animal which arranged the osteoderms in a more pangolin-like arrangement akin to roofing tiles.
Paleoecology[]
Stegosaurus's imposing weaponry wasn't just for show, as multiple specimens of Allosaurus show wounds that closely match the shape and size of the giant Thagomizers on its tail. Other lines of evidence include the remarkable flexibility and power of its tail, with a surprising range of motion allowing the spikes to strike in a variety of locations around the rear and flank of the animal.
