Tarbosaurus bataar is a large carnivorous theropod that lived in Asia during the Late Cretaceous.
It is represented in Prehistoric Kingdom as an alternate genus to Tyrannosaurus.
In-Game[]
Description[]
"Scorched" switches the genus from the more iconic T. rex to the Asian Tarbosaurus bataar. Differences in body shape compared to its North American cousin include a somewhat smaller build and size, shorter arms, longer legs and tail, a thinner snout with less pronounced keratin structures, and the presence of a large dewlap below the throat.
Management[]
Tarbosaurus bataar is a large predator which requires strong fences to keep it contained. It prefers the scrubland, temperate, wetland and desert biomes and a large paddock with moderate foliage and low water density. They are also somewhat solitary animals but can form slightly larger groupings than that of Tyrannosaurus.

The apex predator of the Nemegt Formation, Tarbosaurus bataar.
Nigel Marven
Fossils of this massive predator dominate digsites in the Nemegt, and no one is really sure why. It doesn't make sense that there'd be more Tarbosaurus prowling around than herbivores to feast on. Regardless, the wealth of fossil material we've found of this dinosaur have made it possible to add to our park.
Paleontology[]
Paleoecology[]
As a tyrannosaurine, Tarbosaurus acted as the apex predator of the Nemegt formation. The characteristic keen senses and immense bite force that its family is known for were put to great effect when predating upon the various large herbivores it shared its environment with such as Gallimimus, Deinocheirus, Therizinosaurus, Saurolophus, Barsboldia, Tarchia, Saichania, Nemegtosaurus and Opisthocoelicaudia among others. Tarbosaurus would have likely faced competition from other carnivores in its ecosystem, especially as it was growing as the Nemegt is home to animals such as fellow tyrannosaurine Alioramus, the velociraptorine Adasaurus and a giant unnamed azhdarchid pterosaur, which likely would have preyed on similar food sources to a young Tarbosaurus.
The Nemegt Formation was made up of networks of rivers, streams, mudflats, lakes and floodplains that cut through a seemingly well wooded forest ecosystem with a well developed conifer canopy of sorts. This lush ecosystem was contrasted by a large desert surrounding the area and was also subject to seasonal droughts and a relatively cool winter season for the Mesozoic.

Trivia[]
- The dewlap present on the neck of T. bataar, is more than purely a design feature to distinguish it from T. rex. The dewlap featured in-game is based on rumors from an as of yet undescribed specimen of T. bataar which possibly featured a dewlap on the animal.
